One Question That Can Open a Thousand Doors!

One Question That Can Open a Thousand Doors!

“How can we help you become more successful?”

Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do to build a great relationship is simply to ask the right question.

Let me share a personal experience.

Some years ago, while working on developing libraries across our resort properties, I had the opportunity to work closely with Philip Blackwell, the founder of The Ultimate Library.

Together, we worked on creating beautiful, carefully curated libraries that would add value to our guests’ experiences.

In fact, the library we have at LUX* South Ari Atoll remains, in my view, one of the finest resort libraries you will find anywhere.

During one of Philip’s visits, we were discussing our progress, reviewing what we had achieved and exploring opportunities for improvement.

Then he asked me a question that has stayed with me ever since.

“How can we help you become more successful? What can we do to make this work better for you?”

I was genuinely impressed.

Here was a business owner who was not simply asking how he could sell more products or generate more business.

Instead, he was asking how he could help us succeed!

And that one question changed the way I looked at our partnership.

It opened the door to more conversations, new ideas, greater collaboration and, most importantly, a relationship built on mutual trust.

Over the years, I have personally introduced Philip and The Ultimate Library to several new resort development projects, some of which led to successful business opportunities.

Why?

Because he demonstrated something I deeply value.

He was genuinely interested in helping us succeed before thinking about his own success.

There is a powerful leadership and business lesson here.

Whether you are a leader, service professional, business owner, supplier or simply someone working with others, never underestimate the power of asking:

“What can I do to help you become more successful?”

This simple question can:

  • Open doors to new opportunities.
  • Build stronger relationships and trust.
  • Encourage meaningful collaboration.
  • Help us understand what truly matters to others.
  • Create value that goes beyond a single transaction.

I have always believed that when we focus on adding value to others, opportunities have a way of finding us.

Great partnerships are not built simply by asking what we can gain.

They are built by asking what we can contribute.

And sometimes, the best way to grow your own business is to help someone else grow theirs.

My reflection is simple:

When you help others become successful, you create opportunities for everyone to succeed.

So, here is a question worth reflecting on today.

Who is one person you can reach out to today and ask, “How can I help you become more successful?”

You may be surprised by the doors that one question can open.
