You Are Responsible for Your Own Growth
Building confidence in a particular skill or competency has far more to do with your own actions than external circumstances.
I often hear people say, “My company isn’t giving me enough opportunities to develop the skills I need.” My response is usually the same: it’s easy to blame, point fingers, or make excuses. But that won’t move you forward.
In a recent coaching conversation, I asked someone, “What’s stopping you from spending just 15–30 minutes a day learning through platforms like YouTube, ChatGPT, or any number of free AI tools?” He was stunned. The truth was—he had the time, but he hadn’t realized he was his own biggest obstacle.
I strongly believe that your company is not fully responsible for your career growth. Yes, organizations have a duty and accountability to provide the right environment, support systems, and opportunities. But at the end of the day, it’s your responsibility to take initiative—to carve out time, pursue learning, and build your skillset.
Today, a simple prompt in an AI tool can teach you the foundations of nearly any skill. That’s your head start. The rest is consistency and practice.
So if you find yourself lacking in a particular area, don’t look outward. Look inward and ask: “What can I do today to get better?”
Others may open doors—but you must be the one to walk through them.
